'Piracy is a very topical subject that'can be very hard to know the inns and'outs of. We all know (or should know)'the rights and wrongs when talking'about piracy. piracy is ILLEGAL and you'should never copy anything that has'been protected by law. If you do this'then you are breaking the law and could
face criminal procecusion.
'Right, do you know if you are breaking'the piracy law? I bet that at one time'or another you have broken the law and'copied something, or obtained copied'goods. Who me? Yes you! How many of you'have been listening to the top 20 and'decided to tape it? Well, believe it or'not you have just broken the law.'Firstly you broke the law by copying'the songs, these are copyrighted by the'record company who want you to spend'money on buying their songs and will do'whatever they can to stop people'copying their songs. Secondly (I think)'that radio 1 or whatever radio station'you copied the top 20 from copyright'their radio waves. So if you tape Mark'& Lard going on about total twonk and'like listening to them, you have just'broken the radio 1 copyright laws. How
many of you are still with me?
'Right, how many of you buy your'Saturday paper (or any paper) and have'a flick through for some good films to'watch? Then you make a date on your'calendar to watch the film. Then just'out of the blue you have to go out for'some reason and you wont be in to watch'it. Then it comes to you! The video'recorder. You set the timer and then'you tape the film. Just for the sake of'argument it`s "The Mask". (bad taste I'know, I have nothing against Jim Carrey'or anything!) Guess what, you have just'broken the law and you could face'procecusion. This is because whoever'liscensed the film has to make that'money back by selling the videos. (I'know there is other ways like merchant-'dising or renting to cinemas.) So, how'would you like it if someone is'watching your film and they havn`t paid'you a peney. Pretty peeved, I can tell'you! So if the company have had bad'profits for the film (not getting at'Jim Carrey again!) they may decide to'get alittle bit back by sueing you. I'know it wouldn`t even pay for someones'weeks wages but every little helps. It'won`t make much of a diffrence to them'but it could be quite drastic to you.'How many with me now? Not alot I guess.
[37m(I think you may be wrong there Nick.'The film companies tried your argument'out in court when video recorders first'started to become popular, and they'lost. Something to do with the rights'of viewers to watch stuff that's been'broadcast when it's most suitable to'them. Or something like that. Whatever,'you're allowed to tape stuff that's'been broadcast, though you're not be
allowed to sell it. Ed.)
'Right, for the worst and more wide'spread piracy. This is the world of'computer piracy. If you are in'pocession of a copied game, be it "Army'Moves" from the 80`s or "Worms" from'the 90`s. You have broken the law of'copyright protection and guess what?'You could face criminal porcecusion.'Now, if you copy the games and then'distribute them for a profit to'yourself then this is even worser and'the law clamps down on these people'even harder. You may even get your'equipment taken from you. With a little'research, if you get cought copying'software then you could get 2 options.'Accept that you have been found out and'say bye to all your software and'probably your computer. They take your'computer to make it an inconvenience to'you to copy some more. Or you can go to'court over it which the could result in'you getting a fine, your computer taken'from you and all your software. If you'copy the games on an A500 or an A4000'upgraded to the best specs. available,'they will confiscate either. Then you'are left with nothing. The best thing'to do is get rid of all the software'that you have copied and start fresh.'Start collecting PD software instead,'this is the safest way. Now I bet
hardly any of you are left.
'Right, now for the final kill. Have you'ever been to a car boot sale and'decided to buy a few disks. Lets say,'10P each. Then you look at the label'and notice that it says "Worms Disk'One". If the stall you bought the disk;from is under survalence by the police and you are caught;buying a disk that says this onit, no matter if you bought;it for good purposes or not, you`ll still be punished like;a criminal. This is the less likely to happen but nether$the less you can still get punished.
;This article was wrote to warn some people of the dangers;that can be lurking behind closed doors when copying stuff.;I can`t tell you what to do, but if you get cought don`t
